Plans for North African unity could be short-lived

Monday, April 29, 2024

Significance

On April 22, Tunisian President Kais Saied hosted his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohammed al-Menfi, for a trilateral summit. Discussions focused on migration control and the future of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU). Morocco and Mauritania did not attend, but Menfi dispatched envoys to visit both countries.

Impacts

  • A revived regional alliance, regardless of how fleeting or superficial, would complicate European-North African ties.
  • A tripartite structure is unlikely to affect realities in the Western Sahara territory, where Morocco maintains substantial control.
  • Algeria will seek to undercut Morocco’s deepening ties with the Gulf states and Israel.
